چکیده

We report on extensive V, R, and i band photometry of the black-hole candidate Nova Sco 1994 (GRO J1655–40) obtained during March 1996, when the source was close to its quiescent pre-outburst optical brightness (V=17.3). From our observations and data taken from the literature we derive a refined ephemeris for inferior conjunction of the secondary star: HJD 244 9838.4198(52) + 2.62168(14)×N. We have modeled the V, R, and i band light curves in terms of a Roche lobe filling secondary and an accretion disk around the compact star, the latter described as a flat cylinder with a radial temperature distribution. From the shape of the light curve we constrain the binary inclination and mass of the secondary star to lie in the ranges 63. ◦7–70. ◦7 and 1.60–3.10 M , respectively. This limits the mass of the black-hole to the range 6.29–7.60 M . The mass range we obtained for the secondary star is supported by the results of stellar evolution calculations.

Irradiation of the secondary star in X - ray Nova Scorpii 1994 ( = GRO J 1655 – 40 )

We have obtained intermediate resolution optical spectra of the black-hole candidate Nova Sco 1994 in June 1996, when the source was in an X-ray/optical active state (R ∼15.05). We measure the radial velocity curve of the secondary star and obtain a semi-amplitude of 279±10km s−1; a value which is 30 per cent larger than the value obtained when the source is in quiescence. Our large value for K...

The Recurrent Nova U Scorpii in the 1999 Outburst : the First Detection of a Significant Orbital - Period Change

In this paper we present and discuss our time-resolved photometry of an eclipsing recurrent nova, U Sco, during an outburst in 1999, which was conducted from immediately after the optical maximum to the final fading toward the quiescence. In the first-ever complete light-curve, a few primary and secondary eclipses of the binary system were detected, and the timings of the minima were determined...

The quiescent light curve and evolutionary state of GRO J 1655 – 40

We present ellipsoidal light-curve fits to the quiescent B, V , R and I light curves of GRO J1655–40 (Nova Scorpii 1994). The fits are based on a simple model consisting of a Roche-lobe filling secondary and an accretion disc around the black-hole primary. Unlike previous studies, no assumptions are made about the interstellar extinction or the distance to the source; instead these are determin...

The outburst radial velocity curve of X - Ray Nova Scorpii 1994 ( = GRO J 1655 – 40 ) : a reduced mass for the black hole ?

We present a reanalysis of the outburst radial velocity data for X-Ray Nova Scorpii 1994. Using a model based on X-ray heating of the secondary star we suggest a more realistic treatment of the radial velocity data. Solutions are obtained in the (K 2 , q) plane which, when combined with the published value for the binary mass ratio and inclination, constrain the mass of the black hole to within...

Optical and ROSAT X-ray observations of the dwarf nova OY Carinae in superoutburst and quiescence

We present ROSAT X-ray and optical light curves of the 1994 February superoutburst of the eclipsing SU UMa dwarf nova OY Carinae. There is no eclipse of the flux in the ROSAT HRI light curve. Contemporaneous ‘wide B’ band optical light curves show extensive superhump activity and dips at superhump maximum. Eclipse mapping of these optical light curves reveals a disc with a considerable physical...
